Smart Cards

The goal of this project is to investigate the current standards in smart media such as smart cards and identification wristbands, and determine how best to integrate biometric data with these. One practical application of this technology is in the medical field. CUBS has partnered with a leading biometrics company Ultra-Scan Corporation, Amherst, NY to integrate their fingerprint data, with a Master Patient Index (MPI) system to accurately identify patients in a clinical setting. This fingerprint template can be used to link a person with their medical record in a hospital's medical record system (MRS). By encoding the fingerprint template in a machine readable form on a wristband, medical workers can then positively identify patients without the need to be connected to the MRS infrastructure. The identification can be performed even if the patient is unable to respond.
