UB-STARS Project
Our team is focusing on the development of a fully integrated biometric
platform that can recognize and assess an individual’s face, speech,
fingerprints, gate, writings, response to stimuli, and their internal/external
chemical make-up (e.g., DNA, biomarkers, explosive residues) in real time. We
call this new platform the unobtrusive biometric sense, transmit, assess, and
respond system (UB-STARS). We envision an object-oriented system based on
easily integrated, modular elements that can detect/warn, trigger, sense,
identify, report, and assess an individual. Key aspects of the proposed work
include: (a) developing tailored UB-STARSs at the basic science and
engineering level; (b) developing a complete toolbox for constructing
integrated reporter/response systems; (c) developing associated materials and
systems models and simulators; (d) emphasizing energy efficient detection; (e)
integrating data fusion and human interaction concepts in the reporter design;
(f) developing tools that allow primary suites of sensors to signal
complementary systems (e.g., video, robotic evaluators, human first
responders) for more detailed/tiered assessment; (g) transitioning these
technologies to identified test-beds for field evaluation and design feedback;
and (h) transitioning these technologies to industry.
