Hand Geometry Biometrics

Biometrics such as fingerprints, hand geometry, face and voice biometrics provide a reliable alternative for identity verification and are gaining industry and citizen acceptance. Among these, hand geometry verification has emerged as the most suitable biometric modality for medium and low security application due to its speed and unobtrusive nature. However, the applications of hand geometry have been limited due to its limited accuracy when compared to other modalities. Hand Geometry has emerged as the most suitable modality for been used for an application of medium-level security. Hand Geometry systems are installed at over 8,000 locations including immigration facilities for the INSPASS frequent international traveler system

Hand geometry authentication offers several advantages in this respect. Hand geometry verification systems use geometric measurements of hand as the features for the verification of individuals. Hand geometry measurements are easy to collect and non intrusive. The hardware requirements imposed by such a system are not severe. The system just requires properly placed camera that can get the image of the hand. Furthermore, with back illumination the measurements can be made very robust against ambient lighting conditions. Hand geometry acquisition and verification is extremely fast and accurate enough for verification. It is very well suited for integration with other biometrics and in particular with fingerprints. It is very easy to envision a system that simultaneously acquires hand geometry and fingerprint images. We have developed a new peg-less hand geometry verification system achieving 2.68% total error rate (% FAR, % FRR). Experiments were run over 205 subjects, having 10 images per subject.
